IK Multimedia has launched SampleTank 3 Free, a free lightweight version of their flagship sampling workstation software. The instrument currently includes the Grand Piano 1 SE acoustic piano sample library, with new instrument packs expected to arrive each week.

SampleTank 3 has been rebuilt from the ground up: it has a completely new sound set, fully redesigned easy-to-use interface, new sounds with true-to-life “round robin” and multiple articulations, a new patterns player with MIDI patterns, new effects derived from AmpliTube and T-RackS, a new loop management feature, new filters, a new Live mode and much more.
The full version of SampleTank 3 was released around a month ago and now we finally have the chance to take the brand new freebie version of IK Multimedia’s main virtual instrument for a spin. The factory library which arrives with SampleTank 3 is currently limited to a single instrument, though! At the moment, we can only play around with the Grand Piano 1 SE sample library, although that’s already quite an awesome freebie if you’re looking for a natural sounding grand piano on a budget.

New instrument packs for SampleTank 3 Free will be released each week, adding up to a total of 22 fully functional sample packs in the factory library. There’s no information whatsoever as to what type of instruments we can expect to see, but I guess that we’ll get a taste of some orchestral stuff, world instruments and perhaps also some sampled synthesizers and/or drum machines.

SampleTank 3 Free once again shares all of the features with the full version of the product, bringing 55 effect modules (some of which were borrowed from Amplitube and T-Racks effect series) and a 16-channel mixer for layering different sounds. I’m really looking forward to installing the free version on my machine and testing the performance of the new effects, as well as checking out whether or not SampleTank 3 Free can be used for loading external WAV files.
To grab your free copy of SampleTank 3 Free, you’ll need to register for a free user account at the IK Multimedia website. Once you’ve done that, log in to your user account and visit the User Area page to download the installer and authorize the software. Please note that you’ll also need to download the Authorization Manager in order to authorize your free copy of the product.
UPDATE: SampleTank 3 Free is available for 64-bit hosts only (same as the full version of the product). No 32-bit option with this one, please note before downloading!
